Mallory Park celebrates 50 years since iconic race

-

LEICESTERSHIRE’S Mallory Park Racing Circuit is set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1971 ‘Race of the Year’.

During the race, local hero, John ‘Mooneyes’ Cooper, took on and beat the multiple world champion Italian motorcyclist, Giacomo Agostini.

The Kirkby Mallory circuit, like many other sporting venues, has been adversely affected by the pandemic, and organisers are looking forward to a return to normality.

It wasn’t until 1956 that the first asphalt was laid to create a racetrack. The first meeting was held on May 13 that year with a crowd estimated at 20,000 attending the ‘Grand Opening’ meeting.

Sixty five years later, and having hosted many prestigious events during that time, Mallory Park is still going strong under the ownership of local businessman, Stuart Hicken, who personally oversees the operation.

The circuit layout has hardly changed over the years as it has evolved into one of the premier racing circuits in Europe.

As well as looking forward to the 2021 season, Mallory Park is also looking back as they plan on celebrating the famous and historic anniversary, which took place 50 years ago.

One of the greatest races ever to take place in British motorcycling history took place at Mallory Park half a century ago in September.

In fact, the 1971 ‘Race of the Year’ wasn’t just that, many dubbed it the ‘Race of the Century’.

Mallory Park is planning to commemorate the anniversary once the details of the 2021 calendar is finalised and put in line with current and planned government guidance.

Mallory Park is currently planning a full calendar of action in 2021, including race days, track days, testing, corporate
