RUGBY MILESTONE. THIRTY-TWO years of rugby in Castle Donington were celebrated last week with the anniversary of the local club’s first-ever competitive fixture.

Castle Donington Rugby Union Football Club played its first game on January 15, 1989, beating West Bridgford at the local Community College in the village.

The newly-formed club got off to a flying start with an 18-13 win. The club was led onto the field by Lee Taylor and Dave Kyle scored all 18 points for the victors, with a try, a conversion and four penalties.

According to a newspaper report at the time the victory was made possible by “a very powerful Donington pack, solid defence and good support from the backs.”

The club is now based at Spital Park Pavilion on Spital Hill and runs a men’s adult side, a girls’ section for secondary-aged girls and a growing mixed mini rugby section for primary-aged children.

PRAYER QUILT. Villagers in Castle Donington have been invited by St. Edward’s Parish Church to help to create a Community Prayer Quilt during the current lockdown.

Organisers of the project have told villagers: ” What do you hope for as you look forward? We would love to somehow commemorate the year by creating a community prayer quilt that you have decorated.”

All ages of the community are welcome to take part in the creation of the quilt and participants will be supplied with a pre-cut square patch of fabric in one of four background colours – red, purple, while or green.

Each of the colours has a theme: red is something that the person is thankful for; purple will represent someone whom they wish to remember; white will be about something the person hopes for and green will represent something that inspired the person about creation or the environment.

People helping to create the quilt can decorate their patch of fabric with words, pictures or something abstract.

They can embroider, sew, paint or use fabric pens to make their creation. The church will provide some basic instructions on techniques for decorating the patches of fabric.

People simply have to chose their preferred colour of patch and patches will be issued on a first-come first-served basis.

According to the organisers: ” Whether you go to church or not, whether you are a person of faith or none, all are welcome to join in.”

To take part in the project people of any age have to live, work or go to school or college in the village.

To request a fabric patch local people are asked to contact the church office via email at stedwardscastledonington@ outlook.com or by Messenger.

For people who do not have access to the internet they can call on 01332 812708.

The deadline for completed patches is March 31, 2021.

A small team will then sew all the patches together to create the Castle Donington Prayer Quilt which will be unveiled at a ceremony at Pentecost on May 23 2021, the festival which is celebrated on the 50th day (the seventh Sunday sine Easter Sunday commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and other followers of Jesus. The quilt will be displayed in St. Edward’s Parish Church for all to see and enjoy.
