DOUBLE VICTORY. From not being on a council before to now being on two authorities at the same time is how Sutton Bonington’s Matt Barney finds himself after last Thursday’s elections. He has a seat on both Notts County Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council.

Standing as a local council political candidate - as a Conservative - for the first time, Matt topped the poll to take the Leake and Ruddington division seats, being over 1,000 votes higher than the nearest Labour candidate.

And he was well in front of the Labour candidate in the battle for the village seat on Rushcliffe Borough Council for which he said he was honoured to have been selected as the Conservative candidate.

In his message to electors, he said he is fascinated by politics and the good it can achieve to make everyone’s lives better and was delighted to have stood at the by-election for the village seat. “Together we can get so much more done,” he added.

Matt, who began his education at the primary school in Sutton Bonington and later at the then Harry Carlton, Comprehensive school (now the East Leake Academy) is married with four children.

He says he is passionate about green issues and preventing climate change. “My working life has focussed on large-scale climate mitigation measures. Climate changes goes beyond politics and we must work together to avert catastrophe,” he says.

The new councillor says he had extensive experience working in local and national Government departments. He was a founding member of the Loughborough soup run that has progressed to become the Exaireo Trust, a charity that provides housing and rehabilitation for vulnerable people.

For the parish election, Matt says he is very much aware of local issues and is passionate about making the ward a better place for all residents. Full voting figures: Parish election for the seat on Rushcliffe Borough Council: Matt Barney (Con) 402 (elected), not elected: Andrew Edwards (Lab) 143, Jason Billing (Lib Dem) 62.

She says they look forward to welcoming their special visitor Earlier on the same morning the Archdeacon will have been paying is first visit to St James Church at Normanton on Soar. NOTICEBOARD. Students at the Sutton Bonington campus of Nottingham University have established a special noticeboard on their site to support victims of harassment.

In March earlier this year Sarah Everard went missing as she walked home from a friend’s house in South London. A week later a serving Metropolitan police officer man was charged with her kidnap and murder.

A few boards in the Barn concourse on the Sutton Bonington campus is being used “to write messages of support, grief, anguish and solidarity to show that Sutton Bonington (Sutton Bonington) stands for Sarah and all victims and survivors of harassment.”

There are cards and ribbons at the side of the boards so supporters are asked to take a pen to write with. Welcome to SBBC. PHILLIPINE SUCCESS. After a wonderful and remarkable period of help given to a Phillipines girl by Sutton Bonington parish churches of St Michael’s and St Anne’s, the youngster has now graduated and has a much better start in life thanks to the support from the village.

The help started ten years ago when Noime Escote was just 12 years of age and the sponsorship help from the two churches lasted ten years, organised through Compassion UK.

Noime, who has kept in regular contact with the churches and is now 22 years of age and has graduated from her development project, a position that marks the end of the sponsorship arrangement.

In a report to members of the two churches, parishioners are told that during her time in the programme, Noime has been taught invaluable topics including such as entrepreneurial skills, budgeting and tips on how to find and keep a job.

Staff from the overall controlling organisation have continually worked alongside Noime, to support her in developing a career plan for her future. She has received hygiene education, medical and dental care and also spiritual teaching, such as prayer, bible study and the importance of serving others.

Over the years the Echo has featured several stories on Noime who comes from a poor family with eight brothers and sisters in the mountainous community of Barangay, San Pedro, Irosin in the Philippines.

It is understood that most adults in that area are without stable work but those that do work are day labourers, farmers or carpenters. During the Coronavirus situation Compassion have been busy supporting their frontline church partners with supplies for much needed hand washing, sanitising and clean water.

The two churches at Sutton Bonington are sending a cheque to Noime as a graduation gift and church members are asked to continue to pray for her and her family.

Local resident Anne Dolby was for many years the churches correspondent with Noime and thanks have been recorded to her for that help.
