Shepshed Rams pull off shock win over the league leaders

IT WAS back to normal this week in the various Bowls Loughborou­gh leagues with a full programme of fixtures.

League leaders in the Monday Division 1 Syston Fosseway travelled to Shepshed to play bottom team Rams only to find the Rams in excellent form, going down 50-61 (0-8) but the Fosse remain top on rink wins over second placed Birstall Sands who made the short trip across Birstall to play St Margarets Saints returning home with a comfortabl­e 72-43 (6-2) win. Belgrave Cygnets remain at the foot of the table following their 37-56 (0-8) defeat by Queens Park Queens whilst at Bowling Green Way, hosts Loughborou­gh Phoenix Pegasus went down 37-56 (3-5) against Thringston­e Woodpecker­s.

East Leake Willows had an excellent away win at Birstall Lighthouse in a very close game that saw the Willows take the majority of points with a 51-46 (5-3) win.

Quorn Weavers continue to head up Division 2 despite finding Loughborou­gh Greenfield­s Badgers a difficult team to beat, Weavers just taking the honours 48-47 (6-2) to leave them six points clear of Sileby Swallows whose 47-34 (8-0) win at home against Rothley Crusaders moved them into second place above Loughborou­gh Brush Peregrines who went down to a surprise 43-49 (2-6) defeat at home against Sutton Bonington Riversider­s, the win moving Riversider­s off the bottom.

Kegworth’s 47-53 (0-8) home defeat against Syston White Plum now leaves them languishin­g at the foot of the table two points adrift of Wymeswold Wolds who went down 41-46 (2-6) at home against St Margarets Maggies.

Syston Fosseway Romans extended their lead at the top of Division 3 over Soar Valley Avons after their comprehens­ive 72-39 (8-0) victory against Loughborou­gh Brush Hawks whilst Avons dropped two valuable points in their 53-45 (6-2) win at Syston Swords.

Quorn Dons made the long trip to Keyworth where despite winning on two of the three rinks, they went down 48-54 (4-4) to leave Keyworth Commandos in third place in their first season in the Bowls Loughborou­gh league.

Belgrave Ringers had a close win against Loughborou­gh Greenfield­s Foxes, just getting home 42-39 (5-3) whilst there was another close game at Mountsorre­l where hosts Soar Valley Merlins were on the wrong end of a 42-49 (2-6) score line against visitors Shepshed Lambs who continue to have one of their better seasons.

Wymeswold stride on at the top of the Ladies Tuesday morning league with a comfortabl­e 46-23 (6-0) win at home against Loughborou­gh Phoenix, a win that gives them a five point lead over Kegworth and East Leake. Kegworth had a surprise defeat at home 25-30 (2-4) at home against Loughborou­gh Greenfield­s whilst East Leake came out on top 42-25 (4-2) in their game against Loughborou­gh Brush. A 43-20 (6-0) defeat at the hands of Sileby leaves Soar Valley at the foot of the table.

Shepshed North are the new leaders in the Men’s Thursday Division 1 following good wins against New Lount Hares 66-63 (6-4) in a rearranged game and an emphatic 90-47 (10-0) win against Loughborou­gh Phoenix.

Previous leaders East Leake Willows dropped vital points in a surprise 62-66 (2-8) at the hands of Thringston­e Rangers whilst New Lount Hares put their defeat against North behind them and returned with a solid 73-53 (8-2) win against Birstall based St Margarets Maggies.

Top met bottom in Division 2 where leaders Syston Fosseway just got the better of Kegworth 64-59 (7-3) in a close game and remain top one point ahead of Loughborou­gh Greenfield­s who had a very good 71-37 (8-2) win against local rivals Queens Park Carilloner­s. Wymeswold Wolds moved above Quorn Millers into third place following their 83-57 (8-2) win against the Millers.

Loughborou­gh Brush Eagles continue to soar at the top of Division 3 following their 88-67 (8-2) win at second placed Sileby Swifts, opening up a seven point gap between them, whilst local rivals Rothley Knights and Mountsorre­l based Soar Valley had a close game with the home side Knights taking the spoils 56-51 (6-4).

Meanwhile, Soar Valley’s other team, Valoars, hosted Shepshed South in a game that the visitors took command of early on and finished comfortabl­e winners 75-50 (8-2).

There is new leaders in the Ladies Friday evening league, New Lount, taking advantage of their game in hand of Wymeswold, move to the top after they beat Shepshed Lambs 37-33 (4-2) in a very close game, whilst at Holt Drive hosts Loughborou­gh Greenfield­s secured a ten shot win 41-31 (4-2) against visitors Quorn to put them into fourth place.

This was the first major match of the year after the relaxation of Covid rules. Brush were congratula­ted on their ability to host the event and also to celebrate the opening of their recently renovated clubhouse.
