Windows smashed during late-night vandalism

- By NICHOLAS DAWSON News Reporter

AN elderly couple were awoken by a loud bang as a vandal smashed several of their windows during a string of criminal damage incidents in Loughborough.

Brian and Trish Harrison, who are both in their 70s, were jolted awake as an attacker threw heavy pieces of granite through five of the windows of their static caravan, including the bedroom, kitchen, living room and hall.

Mr Harrison said the loud thuds sounded like someone was ramming against the side of their property, in the incident on Thursday, July 29, at around 3.20am.

A similar attack took place at around the same time in nearby Rockingham Road, with reports made at 3.20am of a vehicle having its windows smashed.

There was also a report at 3.40am of a vehicle in Bishop Street having its windows smashed.

Mr Harrison immediately called 999 to report the incident.

He said he has CCTV of the outside of the property, which recorded a well-built man wearing a mask, who he claims carried out the attack.

He also said he saw the man in the footage try to pick up a statuette of a lion outside their property but it was too heavy for him to lift.

The couple live in the Palma Park static caravan estate at the bottom of Shelley Street, with their home near the estate entrance, meaning the culprit could quickly get away. However, Mr Harrison said he can’t think why anyone would carry out the attack.

He said: “If somebody wanted revenge, you would put a brick through one window. It’s not logical to do all of them.

“We’re a bit apprehensive about things now. We were talking about moving away, but at 77, it’s a case of finding somewhere else.

“It’s just that uneasiness of will it happen again? You never can tell.”

They have lived on the estate for seven years.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “Due to the closeness in location and times, officers believed that they may be linked.

“The incidents remain under investigation and anyone who may have witnessed what happened or has any information about those responsible can contact police on 101.”
