Kegworth Ladies open up gap at the top of Tuesday League
BOWLS Loughborough Monday Men’s league Division 1 leaders, Syston Fosseway suffered a surprise home defeat at the hands of Thringstone Woodpeckers in a tight game.
The “Woodies” won the game 52-51 (6-2) to move up into third place, five points behind the leaders but with a game in hand. Birstall Sands into second place following an exciting game at Queens Park where they returned home 44-41 (5-3) victors over Queens.
The remaining two games played were close affairs, Shepshed Rams 46-44 (4-4) winners against East Leake Willows whilst a turn round of ten shots on the last end across the three rinks gave Belgrave Cygnets a share of the points in a 56-50 (4-4) score line in their match with Loughborough Phoenix Pegasus.
The top three in Division 2 all had good 6-2 wins, with leaders Quorn Weavers having the closest game, 48-47 (6-2) winners at home against Sutton Bonington Riversiders, second placed Sileby Swallows hosted Loughborough Brush Peregrines and finished with a 56-36 (6-2) win, whilst Syston White Plum travelled to Birstall to play the bottom side, St Margarets Maggies, and returned home with a 51-44 (6-2) victory. Kegworth hosted Rothley Crusaders at their Nottingham Road green but found the visitors in good form, the Crusaders taking all the points with a comfortable 63-42 (8-0) win. Meanwhile, Wymeswold Wolds took advantage of results going their way, securing a 45-39 (6-2) win against Loughborough Greenfields Badgers to climb three places up the table.
Newcomers, Keyworth Commandos are the significant movers in Division 3, moving up to second place five points behind leaders Syston Fosseway Romans but with a game in hand. Commandos had a fine 51-38 (6-2) home victory over Belgrave Ringers, whilst Romans march on with a resounding 81-40 (8-0) win at Mountsorrel against Soar Valley Merlins.
Quorn Dons travelled to Nanpantan to play Loughborough Brush Hawks and returned home with a good 58-35 (7-1) result to leave themselves sitting comfortably in mid table, whilst Shepshed Lambs were not so successful on their travels, going down 52-63 (2-6) at Syston Swords. Loughborough Greenfields Foxes and Soar Valley Avons game was a close affair at Holt Drive with hosts, Foxes, losing out by three shots on the match but sharing the points 51-54 (4-4).
Kegworth opened up a five point gap at the top of the Ladies Tuesday morning league after their 39-22 (6-0) victory in the top two clash at East Leake, the result dropping East Leake to third place following Shepsheds 33-30 (4-2) success at home to Loughborough Greenfields which moved Shepshed into second place.
However, the shock result of the day was in the game at Keyworth where the hosts doubled their points tally for the season with an excellent 41-23 (6-0) win against Wymeswold although, Loughborough Phoenix also came up with a surprising win at Sileby (6-0). Loughborough Brush entertained Soar Valley at Nanpantan, the host scoring an emphatic 58-17 (6-0) to move above their visitors in the table. In a rearranged game played on August 13, Wymeswold moved up to second in the table following their 48-37 (4-2) win against Sileby, dropping Shepshed down into third place.
Shepshed North extended their lead over New Lount Hares at the top of the Men’s Thursday evening league Division 1 to eight points with three games to go with a full house 77-54 (10-0) win against St Margarets Maggies, Hares dropping two valuable points in their 88-58 (8-2) win against Thringstone Rangers. Loughborough Phoenix Flyers suffered their heaviest defeat for many years when they went down 43-122 (0-10) to East Leake Willows to leave the Flyers perilously close to the drop into Division 2.
The top of the table clash in Division 2 between leaders Loughborough Greenfields and Syston Fosseway went the way of Greenfields, 65-63 (6-4) winners in a very close game to extend the gap to three points between the two sides. Third placed Wymeswold Wolds suffered a shock 61-87 (2-8) defeat at the hands of bottom team Kegworth whilst Quorn Millers moved above their opponents, Queens Park Carilloners courtesy of a 76-49 (8-2) win.
Only two games were played in Division 3 where Loughborough Brush Eagles extended their lead over their opponents Soar Valley to eleven points, following their 69-55 (6-4) win whilst the other game, between Sileby Swifts and Shepshed South, was an extremely close affair, with South edging home 71-69 (6-4).
New Lount ladies continue at the top of the Ladies Friday evening league after a comfortable 58-26 (6-0) home win against bottom team Shepshed Lions, whilst Shepshed Lambs comprehensive 56-16 (6-0) win against Quorn keeps them within five points of Lount with just one game each to play. Loughborough Greenfields opted to play their home game at East Leake whilst work was carried out on their Holt Drive green, East Leake taking advantage of playing at home to win 40-23 (6-0). In a re-arranged game between the bottom two clubs, Syston Fosseway came out on top with a 37-26 (4-2) win against Shepshed Lions.
Bowls Leicestershire brought their Men’s Presidential team to Loughborough this week to play against a Bowls Loughborough Men’s league side at the home of Loughborough Phoenix.
The game was played to raise funds for the Bowls Leicestershire Benevolent Fund which helps bowlers who have fallen on hard times or are ill, by providing them with a small gift to help them along and show they are not missed by their fellow bowlers.
Chairman for Bowls Loughborough, Terry Whiteside, presented County President Terry Richards with a donation to the Benevolent Fund of £251 raised on the night and said he hoped that the fixture could become an annual event. The match was won by Bowls Leicestershire 125-97.
