Why don’t people bring own shopping bags?

-

IT has been six years since the carrier bag charge was introduced in England.

Yet some people still have never bothered to bring their own bags when shopping. Surely people should have learnt to bring bags by now.

I work at a supermarket and see the same faces a few times a week having to buy a bag.

Also, what I don’t understand is some customers who have been to another shop to buy a couple of items, bought a bag from there, come to my work, buy a couple more items and another bag. All items could have been put into the same bag - nothing which could cross contaminate such as cleaning products with food.

Then you get customers who say that they left their bags in the car so buy some. My work is in a retail park in the county and with other shops around it, why not pack at the car?

I live near a block of flats belonging to a social housing association.

The bins are overflowing with rubbish in brand new carrier bags.

They don’t tie up properly and if the bag is not placed upright, rubbish falls through the gaps at the top. Actual bin bags are cheaper and designed to tie up fully.

These people are saying “it’s only 20p” when they buy the bags all the time.

These “only 20ps” soon add up. If they buy 12 bags a week on average with 5p for the first two years, 10p for the next two years and 20p for the last two years - that’s almost £440. Think how many weeks that amount feeds your family?

Please bring bags to every shop you go to.
