Bloomin’ wonderful achievement as the town wins gold for 10th time in 10 years

-

LOUGHBOROUGH struck gold for the 10th time as its “fantastic” floral displays wowed judges in the East Midlands in Bloom awards.

The town was awarded gold in the small city category at this year’s awards ceremony, which took place in Grimsby on Wednesday, September 22.

It’s the tenth time Loughborough has achieved gold in the competition since 2011.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, deputy chairman of the Loughborough in Bloom board, said: “To be awarded gold for the tenth time since 2011 is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved.

“Bloom is a community effort and although the past 18 months have been challenging due to the pandemic, this result is testament to everyone’s hard work and commitment. Thank you to all of the community groups and the many volunteers for all of their efforts this year, and the organisations which support Bloom, including Love Loughborough and Loughborough University.”

The theme for this year’s display in the town centre was the 800th anniversary of the Royal Charters, which granted permission for Loughborough market and fair. The town centre was blooming with vibrant pink, purple and orange flowers and plants.

Cllr Jenny Bokor, lead member for Loughborough, said: “It’s wonderful news that the town has once again been awarded gold and acknowledges the hard work of everyone who dedicates their time to make the town look beautiful every year.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been involved and to our partners Serco and idverde for their continued support of Loughborough in Bloom.

“It’s a wonderful achievement for our town.”

There was also a judge’s award for Mountfields Allotment, in Loughborough, and Barrow Upon Soar was awarded silver in the small town category.

Judging this year was carried out on a smaller scale compared to previous years and measures were put in place to keep people safe.

The Loughborough in Bloom effort was supported by community groups, residents, businesses, and organisations from across Loughborough.
