COMMUNITY AWARDS RETURN. East Leake’s popular Community Award scheme is back after a beak due to the coronavirus scare and nominations for the 2021 version are being sought.

Organiser Nichola Doherty in her upbeat message seeking support for the activity, says: “Hello Everyone! Yes, It is that time of year again......” adding that the village has had plenty to be proud of again this year.

“We’ve had so many people who once again have gone above and beyond for our village....so we need you to nominate who you think should be this year’s recipient of the East Leake Community Award,” with Nicky adding that their contribution to the village should be in addition to their paid employment but other than that it is up to everyone to put names forward for being voted on.

Nicky is asking for residents to please email their nominations to her at nicky. doherty@ntlworld.com, and let them know who in the village deserves special thanks.

There are voting slips in the Greengrocers from Monday with a request that nominations are received by October 16 please.

Nicky says she will eventually be posting a list of the nominees and everyone can then vote for the winner .

The award will be presented at the much-looked-forwardto the village Christmas Lights Switch on which will be taking place on November 27 , and when hundreds of people will be expected to be on the streets in the centre of the East Leake for what is usually billed as the time for being the first official visit of the year for Santa Claus.

”Get voting folks!!” is the message from Nicky.

The community award event was started in 2017 and the first recipient of it was Mel Roper, followed by Kevin Shaw, currently chairman of the parish council, and then Conrad Oatey. It was not held in 2020 because of the UK pandemic situation but is now back again on the village calendar much to the delight of the village.

OPEN MIC NIGHT. East Leake’s popular Nags Head public house is inviting people to support their monthly Open Mic Night, whether those interested have recently started to play an instrument lately or have you been playing for years.

The evening provides an opportunity to anyone wanting to have a go at performing in a relaxed environment. All experiences are welcome, with an added comment they might even get some tips and advice from more experienced musicians!

There is an added benefit in that each person performing will receive a free drink!

The opportunity to be involved is on the first Sunday of every month from 5:30pm to - 9:30pm.

PLANS. No objections have been raised by East Leake Parish Council Planning Committee members to an application to erect a single storey rear extension at 3 Redgate Place in the village.

HOUSES APPROVED. Despite an objection from East Leake Parish Council, the building of 51 houses on Rempstone Road in the village has been approved by Rushcliffe Parish Council.

While the Parish Council objected to the development, they requested that if the housing went ahead “the on-site play provision on the larger site caters by design for younger children and does not have much space to be extended to include facilities for older children, nor would it be appropriate to do so in this location.”

The Parish Council also said that East Leake’s central Neighbourhood Play Area for older children is on Gotham Road, providing a range of more challenging equipment. They requested that funds should be made available to the Parish Council to provide additional items of play equipment aimed at older children to be located on the Gotham Road Play area.

David Wilson Homes are the developers on the site and they hope the latest show home interiors will inspire would be occupants.

The development has been named as The Skylarks and includes a bedroom designed for a young mathematician while another hopes to attract aspiring

Mr. Robinson said: ”Bringing services together such as the local GPS, the pharmacy and the library will have huge benefits to the village and all the users of these services.”

Rushcliffe MP Ruth Edwards is also backing the bid and is urging residents to register their support by going to her website.

`Back the bid’ flyers are also be delivered in the village so that residents can sign up to support it by post as well as on-line.

TRIO STEP DOWN. Three members of the East Leake based Village Health Patients Partnerships Group have stood down from its membership -- they are Ann Weekly , Pam O`Toole and Kath Oakley —and have been thanked for their contribution and enthusiasms during their term as members .

The Patient Partnership Group (PPG) now combines the membership of the previously separate Surgeries of Keyworth and East Leake. The group is working hard to share and learning together based on what has been working well , and opportunities to benefit from the combined experience and insights, to support their joint patient communities . Recruitment is now underway to make sure that they fully represent the diverse needs of their communities.

The Group say they are currently looking to recruit new members to the PPG.and if anyone is interested and would like to apply, then do so online to https:// villagehealthgroup.co.uk/ppg or fill in the form below and email it to nnccg. eastleakemedicalgroup@nhs. net or leave at the reception desk. Any forms should be marked for the attention of the Administrator, Rebecca Holford.

To join the PPG you have to be a patient registered with the practice, have no ongoing complaints concerning the practice and no personal axe to grind. “We are not a complaining group at all, we discuss ways of improving services in a constructive manner. We do not discuss complaints or personal grievances during meetings - these are dealt with by the practice.

The PPG is there to support the practice in providing their services by giving constructive feedback and suggestions; listening to patients by doing surveys and talking to patients about their experiences. The PPG also has a role in promoting the responsibility of patients in the healthcare setting.

The Group say they are all volunteers and give what time we wish and are able to. “As patients of the practice we have strict confidentiality rules for the members. Members of the practice usually attend the meetings.”

WI TALK. Julie Kinnear bought a touch of glamour to the September meeting of East Leake Women’s Institute with a very entertaining talk about the amazing life and times of Coco Chanel.

Members found it was fascinating to hear of this icon’s rise from humble beginnings and her progression from milliner to fashion designer with her trademark style and the creation of her famous perfume, christened Chanel No. 5 as it was the fifth sample she tested.

The recent activities for members of the branch have included a stroll round Whatton Gardens followed by refreshments in the courtyard, a craft session and an enjoyable dinner at the Rancliffe Arms in Bunny.

This month members will be walking around Barrow on Soar with refreshments afterwards, enjoying a Craft session and lunch at The Star in West Leake in October.

SKATEPARK ART CONTEST. Artists are being encouraged to enter a competition to decorate the concrete skatepark in East Leake.

The skatepark is located on the Gotham Road Recreation Ground and East Leake Parish Council are looking for applications from local artists, organisations or groups to decorate the concrete skatepark.

There is no fixed theme for the decoration as the Council want to enable artists “to put their own stamp on it.”

The Parish Council said:” There is no fixed theme, to enable artists to put their own stamp on it. We would certainly welcome designs that incorporate some link to the site of the skatepark, be it to East Leake itself (this could be historical or incorporate features of the current village centre) or link to the natural environment of Meadow Park.”
