Friends revitalising park are given a cash boost by council

- By STAFF REPORTER

A park in Mountsorrel is being revitalised with the help of a Charnwood Community Grant.

The Friends of Mountsorrel Castle Gardens have been awarded £970 to support the cost of replanting the main entrance flower beds at Mountsorrel Castle Gardens.

The open space, which is owned by Charnwood Borough Council, is one of 16 projects to be supported by the council in its latest round of grants funding with a total of £40,000 awarded to groups.

The volunteering group is working in partnership with Mountsorrel Parish Council and the authority’s open spaces partner, idverde, to help maintain the park.

Councillor Liz Blackshaw, the council’s lead member for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “I am so pleased to see this project be supported by our Charnwood Community Grants scheme. The volunteers do a fantastic job of helping our open spaces partner, idverde, maintain this park for local residents and visitors to enjoy.

“I would encourage local community projects to look into our community grant schemes to see the support available to them.

“The council is always looking to assist these wonderful projects.”

The Friends of Mountsorrel Castle Gardens work closely with Homefield College, which is next to the park, and provide opportunities for students to volunteer at the open space and learn gardening skills.

Katie Rush, secretary of The Friends of Mountsorrel Castle Gardens, said: “I am really proud of the voluntary work that we do at Castle Gardens and the support we have received from the council is greatly appreciated. We are all local residents, and our aim is to create and maintain a wildlifefriendly, green space that everyone can enjoy.”

The council offers a wide range of community grants to voluntary and community sector organisations across Charnwood.
