Interestin­g talk for WI

PRESIDENT Carole Grout welcomed members and two visitors who had braved the less than Spring-like evening to attend the April meeting of Thorpe Acre WI.

She signed the previous meeting’s Minutes and gave feedback back on the Hathern open meeting which had been enjoyed.

Sue W then read out the report on the Annual Council Meeting which had been prepared by our delegate, Sue Y, who was currently on holiday.

A Certificat­e for our 60th anniversar­y had been collected and was now able to be viewed on the notice board.

Future events include a croquet taster session on July 24 at Leicester Croquet

Club (£12 per person, afternoon or evening); autumn dabble day on November 23 at South Croxton (£20 to include materials).

There will be a holiday in Harrogate January 13-17 2025 at a cost of £339pp plus single supplement of £20.

Treasurer Marilyn M reported that we now have 31 members, plus another joining this evening.

She also has raffle tickets for sale for the draw in September.

Tickets were also still available for the Borderland Group Meeting on May 15 at Kegworth. Marilyn will be stepping down as Treasurer in November, so a replacemen­t is being sought.

A board was passed round for people to make suggestion­s for future trips and activities during the coming summer months.

Sue W will be offering strawberry teas again in June at a cost of £8 per person. Money will be collected at the May meeting. Outstandin­g deposits were collected for the pie night at the Beacon on April 23 and names are being taken for the Adventure Golf event on May 16.

The next coffee morning will be at Esquires in the High Street and at Sue Y’s home on April 24, and Woolly Women get together again on April 26 at Linda L’s home.

Carole then introduced the speaker, Wendy Martin, who gave an interestin­g talk entitled ‘Barnard Castle to Berwick upon Tweed’, about a trip between the two venues. She was thanked by Sue W.

The competitio­n for a walking stick was won by Jennie L, with Sue W second and Janice N third. Flowers for the President’s table were supplied by Julie E and refreshmen­ts were served by Linda W and Hazel F. Members were also treated to a delicious 60th Anniversar­y fruit cake, made and decorated by Sue W especially for the meeting.

The next meeting is on May 14 at 7.30pm at Thorpe Acre Church Hall when the Resolution for 2024 on Dental Health will be discussed and a vote taken. The competitio­n will be for An Item Beginning with M. All welcome!
