Veteran biker Bernard, 90, revved up and still leader of the pack...

-

A BIKER is still enjoying life in the fast lane – despite just turning 90.

Bernard Devine has been riding motorbikes for most of his life.

He is a member of a group of bikers who ride out from the Old King’s Arms in Sutton every week. Bernard, of Tunnicliffe Road, Sutton, has been riding motorcycles for more than 60 years. He started with a moped, moved up to a Bantam 175 and then on to his favourite, the Honda 175 twin.

As his family grew Bernard bought a BSA Golden Flash with sidecar. He, his late wife Sylvia and two daughters would go out for regular rides with a group of biking enthusiasts called the Macclesfield Charioteers.

His love of motorbikes has been passed down the generations. His daughter, Gail Ward, 55, rides a bike with her husband Martin as well as their son Ben, 28, who is the landlord of the Old King’s Arms.

Bernard said: “The thing I love about riding is the camaraderie. I love getting out in the good weather and riding off into the wild where you stop for a pint and a pie. There’s nothing better. I don’t own a bike at the moment but ride pillion. It means I get to still enjoy the ride, just do none of the work.”

Biking is just one of many hobbies that keeps Bernard active. The retired engineer is also a keen gardener and avid Macclesfield Town FC supporter. Gail, who also lives in Sutton, is proud of his lust for life.

She said: “Dad is really popular in the village. I’m really proud how active he is. Age is certainly no barrier with him.”

Bernard has lived alone since his wife Sylvia died three years ago. Gail added: “Dad does all his own washing, ironing and cleaning. He’s a modern man and loves his independence.”
