Young runner’s victory keeps it in the family
AYOUNG sprinter is carrying on the sporting successes of her parents.
Serena Carroll, a pupil at Tytherington’s Marlborough School, competed in the year four girls 60 metre sprint at Macclesfield and Districts Primary Schools Athletics competition at Macclesfield Harriers’ athletics track.
And after winning her heat against pupils from other schools in the area, she then went on to take gold in the final.
And the nine-year-old racer is channelling the achievements of her parents - 32-year-old Bernadette Carroll and Wayne Goldtraw, 38 – who both previously won the same distance race themselves in their youth.
Bernadette said: “The second the girls set off to race, the look of determination on Serena’s face said it all.
“I knew that she wanted gold so badly and that she was going to make sure that she was the first girl to cross that finishing line. She put everything into the final, and I was so proud to watch her be presented with the gold medal.
“The training Serena received prior to the event was superb, the sport at the Marlborough Primary School is outstanding and we are very thankful for the time and effort the PE staff put into their sporting achievers.”
Now Serena is hoping to go on to compete professionally, and maybe in the Olympics.
Bernadette added: “Serena spent many years as a gymnast but turned to ath- letics last year and now competes for Macclesfield Harriers.
“I was once an athlete at Sale Harriers club in Manchester, competing in lots of major events all over the country and won many competitions and medals.
“It is so nice to see that history is repeating itself. My dream was once to run in the Olympic games but I never got there. Myself and Serena would both love it if she could fulfil that dream and compete in the games.”
