Thrilling finish to Storey
DAME Sarah Storey stunned double Olympic champion, Laura Trott, to claim a thrilling National Points race title on the final day of racing at Manchester’s National Cycling Centre.
Disley’s Paralympic star even overshadowed Jess Varnish, who completed a grand slam of National titles for a second successive year.
Golden girl Trott won the Commonwealth Points crown just two months ago.
But she and Glasgow 2014 medallists Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald couldn’t keep pace with the 36-year-old mum of one in the gruelling 25-kilometre race.
“I feel a bit overwhelmed,” said Storey (right) after relegating double world champion Barker into silver and Trott into bronze.
“I wasn’t expecting to be the rider that won at all. Katie is on fire at the moment and I just wanted to make the race fast because that would play into her hands too.
“I found myself taking a lap, which seemed to take forever. That helped me take the points and once I realised halfway through I thought ‘brilliant, let’s keep going.’
“It was fantastic though, it’s such a hard race, I’m really pleased and overwhelmed.”
