Armed raid at cor­ner shop

AKNIFE- WIELD­ING rob­ber held up a cor­ner shop in broad day­light.

Shop staff were con­fronted by the hooded thief at the Hel­dan Ltd newsagent on the Moss es­tate.

The man en­tered the shop on Moss Lane, at the junc­tion with Park­gate Road, at around 10.30am on Thurs­day, Oc­to­ber 16.

Po­lice said he was car­ry­ing a knife and stole cash from the till be­fore leav­ing the shop and mak­ing off on a bike along Moss Lane.

Neigh­bours said they were shocked by the in­ci­dent. One neigh­bour on Moss Lane, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s un­nerv­ing when some­thing like this hap­pens but we’ve got a good com­mu­nity around here and this kind of thing is un­usual.”

Another neigh­bour on Moss Bower Road, said: “It’s shock­ing to hear about some­thing like that hap­pen­ing so close by.

“Things like that don’t hap­pen that of­ten around here.”

PC Dale Hawtin, of Mac­cles­field CID, said, “Rob­bery is a se­ri­ous of­fence and one that Cheshire Po­lice are com­mit­ted to tack­ling.

I want to re­as­sure re­tail- ers that we take any in­ci­dents of this na­ture ex­tremely se­ri­ously and will do all we can to trace those re­spon­si­ble and any in­for­ma­tion from the pub­lic is al­ways acted upon.”

Staff at the shop de­clined to com­ment.

Coun Laura Jeuda, Cheshire East coun­cil­lor for Mac­cles­field south which cov­ers the Moss es­tate, said: “It’s ob­vi­ously a shock when this hap­pens and must have been ter­ri­ble for the shop staff but I’m sat­is­fied the po­lice acted quickly. There is a great com­mu­nity of peo­ple on the Moss who look out for each other.

“This is a se­ri­ous in­ci­dent but we don’t want to alarm peo­ple.”

Any­one with in­for­ma­tion is asked to call po­lice on 101 with in­for­ma­tion. ●● PO­LICE have ar­rested a 37-year-old man in con­nec­tion with their in­ves­ti­ga­tion into the in­ci­dent. He has been bailed un­til De­cem­ber.
