Armed raid at corner shop

AKNIFE- WIELDING robber held up a corner shop in broad daylight.

Shop staff were confronted by the hooded thief at the Heldan Ltd newsagent on the Moss estate.

The man entered the shop on Moss Lane, at the junction with Parkgate Road, at around 10.30am on Thursday, October 16.

Police said he was carrying a knife and stole cash from the till before leaving the shop and making off on a bike along Moss Lane.

Neighbours said they were shocked by the incident. One neighbour on Moss Lane, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s unnerving when something like this happens but we’ve got a good community around here and this kind of thing is unusual.”

Another neighbour on Moss Bower Road, said: “It’s shocking to hear about something like that happening so close by.

“Things like that don’t happen that often around here.”

PC Dale Hawtin, of Macclesfie­ld CID, said, “Robbery is a serious offence and one that Cheshire Police are committed to tackling.

I want to reassure retail- ers that we take any incidents of this nature extremely seriously and will do all we can to trace those responsibl­e and any informatio­n from the public is always acted upon.”

Staff at the shop declined to comment.

Coun Laura Jeuda, Cheshire East councillor for Macclesfie­ld south which covers the Moss estate, said: “It’s obviously a shock when this happens and must have been terrible for the shop staff but I’m satisfied the police acted quickly. There is a great community of people on the Moss who look out for each other.

“This is a serious incident but we don’t want to alarm people.”

Anyone with informatio­n is asked to call police on 101 with informatio­n. ●● POLICE have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with their investigat­ion into the incident. He has been bailed until December.
