Liam’s leave of absence

RISING boxer Liam Hanrahan has revealed that he will be taking a break from the sport.

The superbantamweight was set to fight in Sheffield this month, but has now decided to take time away.

Hanrahan (right) has tasted success so far, winning eight of his nine pro bouts.

He suffered defeat in his last outing though, losing to Krzysztof Rogowski at the Manchester Arena in September.

Hanrahan has regularly impressed crowds in Manchester during his matches, and he admits it’s been a difficult few months’ contemplation over the decision.

“I’ve been going over it since Christmas and after a good think I made my mind up this week,” he said. “Personally I always thought it was an excuse when people say they fell out of love with boxing, but it’s true for me.

“I thought it was time to step back and find that hunger again as I’m not going to do something half-heartedly and disappoint the fans.

“It’s been getting me down a bit and I’ve been putting a brave face on to make people happy.

“I’m not going to rush back until I feel it’s the right time.

“It might take three months or it might take 18 months, but I’m still young and I’m confident that I will be back at some point.

“People will think I’m making this decision because I lost my last fight, but I’ve already got over that.

“It’s something I’ve been thinking about for my last few fights, I’ve been struggling to get motivated

“I’m still keeping my hand in as I’ll be going down to the gym in Macclesfield and training the kids.

“I’ve seen a bit of the feedback that I’ve been getting from people since making the decision and I have filled up a few times.

“This isn’t the end for me though and like I said, I do plan on coming back at some point in the future.

“I’ve enjoyed every second of my career so far and I can’t thank the fans enough for their support.”
