Prest­bury at home for opener

THE draw for this year’s MDLGA Bell Cup – which fea­tures ladies teams from nearly 90 clubs – has been made and Prest­bury have been handed a tie on home soil.

Prest­bury ladies won the tro­phy in thrilling style at Green­mount in 2013 and their strong team will be look­ing to re­peat that suc­cess this time around.

Their team begin on the cup trail with a pre­lim­i­nary-round tie and victory at home over Black­burn will take them into the last 64.

Dun­ham For­est will be de­fend­ing the tro­phy they won for the first time in 2014 at Ast­bury.

This year’s fi­nals day will be at Rochdale Golf Club, the home club of MDLGA pres­i­dent Janet Collins.

In the pre­lim­i­nary round the ties fea­tur­ing lo­cal clubs see Daven­port host Dids­bury, Wilm­slow pay a visit to Bolton Lo­s­tock and there’s also a derby that pitches Tyther­ing­ton against Alder­ley Edge.

Macclesfield and Styal are al­ready through to round one.

At Romi­ley Golf Club ground staff and play­ers de­fied some hor­ren­dous weather con­di­tions for the lat­est Manch­ester Al­liance fix­ture.

Ben Thom­son, as­sis­tant pro­fes­sional at Hazel Grove and his club part­ner Roy Cam­pion posted a top pro-am score of 42 points.

Next in were Liam Burgess (Bra­mall Park) and Chris Jack­son (Tyther­ing­ton) who won a card play-off on 41 points from Dids­bury duo Peter and Steve Bar­ber.

For­mer Euro­pean ta­ble ten­nis cham­pion John Hil­ton (Mottram Hall) teamed up with Re­gent Park’s Mar­cus Cor­field to win a count­back on 40 points in the am-am sec­tion from Brian Car­roll and Mick Wal­lace (Bolton Old Links) and Chris Lee and Tony Wood­ward (Mel­lor and Town­scliffe).
