Jobs at new post office revealed

Macclesfield Express - - BEFORE THE BENCH -

WHSMITH bosses say they have recruited ten members of staff to run their new post office - the same number that run the current Crown Post office.

Two existing post office employees will transfer to the new venue at WHSmith on Mill Street.

It was announced last month that the central Crown Post Office branch on Castle Street is closing and a franchise will open at WHSmith instead.

The decision was met with disappointment from town leaders and residents who are concerned about the level of service and that there will be longer queues.

There have also been concerns over jobs losses.

Now WHSmith has announced that the company has recruited the same number of staff for the new branch. Coun Janet Jackson, Macclesfield mayor, said she is pleased about the job numbers but wants assurances over pay and conditions. She said: “was very disappointed that the Post Office overruled the views of the people who objected and made the decision to close the Crown branch.

“I’m yet to be convinced it’s the right location. We need to know that services will be the same and that staff will be paid the same.

“We need well paid experienced staff in our post office and not a dumbed down service.”

A WHSmith spokesman said positions include a manager, assistant manager and full and part time counter clerks and all have been filled.

The new branch will open on Thursday, March 5, with opening hours from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 3pm on Sundays.
