YOUR SPORTS STAR

-

Name: Andrew Cowell – First Team Manager. What team / sports club are you involved with? Poynton Football Club. What is your position there? First Team Manager. How many members do you have? The club has 700. Unfortunately my playing days are now over. What do you enjoy most about it? Having played for a long time it would leave a big hole not to be involved in football on a Saturday afternoon.

We have a great set of lads and a fantastic team spirit but I’m very competitive so winning is the most enjoyable aspect and thankfully we have done that a lot over the last two seasons.

I’m confident that will continue and we will win the Stockport Cup and next season the league. How often do you train? We train once a week and have a short six-week break in the summer. Where do you train? We train at Poynton Sports Club and we have a tough fitness session followed by football drills and then preparation for the weekend’s game. What do you enjoy the most about your sport/position there? Management is rewarding when it goes right – and lonely when it goes wrong – but if you can provide advice that makes the players better individually and collectively then it is rewarding. Where and when do you meet? We train at 7.30pm-9pm on a Tuesday evening and then at 3pm on Saturday, either on our own pitch or in some other part of Cheshire. What are the best things about Macclesfield? For me it has to be a football-related answer and I always enjoyed playing games at Moss Rose.

But also, the planned regeneration works will be hugely positive for the town centre and really help the retailers. What is the most memorable sportsrelated thing to have happened to you? Saving a penalty live on Radio 5 in an FA Cup penalty shoot-out. What has been your greatest sporting achievement? As a player I enjoyed winning leagues which I was luckily to do with a few clubs. Do you play any other sports? I just enjoy running, staying fit and playing golf. Any other information? Please come and support our club. We appreciate everyone who comes and watches and lends their support.
