Global success for Macc Town’s World Cup bid

-

MACCLESFIELD Town FC’s bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup has gone global.

The club’s website views rocketed by 600 per cent after the Express reported on its tongue-in-cheek campaign to bring the contest to the 6,355-capacity Moss Rose stadium.

Media manager James Beckett said: “The response has been fantastic and the article has certainly generated a buzz around the football club.

“We’ve done eight live interviews on radio stations and had requests from New Zealand to Northern Ireland!

“Website traffic over the two days following the article was greater than the whole of May and media requests keep rolling in. It seems people certainly want to back the bid!”

He added: “Obviously it was a bit of a PR stunt from us, we want to raise the club’s profile both nationally and locally.

“We have a terrific catchment area around the club and if we show we are prepared to have a laugh, that can only appeal to potential supporters.

“We had a great season last year and hope to have another this year. We want people to be proud of their football club, even if we aren’t successful with our World Cup bid!”
