Visitors get creative at trust’s new day centre
A FABULOUS arts and media centre has been officially opened at the Rossendale Trust.
The Oakwood Arts and Media Centre has been set up as a bespoke day service for adults with learning disabilities living both at Rossendale Trust and in the wider community.
It offers a range of recreational, social and informal learning experiences for its participants, with courses in photography, computer skills, horticulture and woodwork.
It was due to be opened earlier this year but celebrations had to be called off due to snow.
But this time visitors were able to bask in glorious sunshine and enjoy all the facilities the new centre has to offer.
In a speech on the day, chief executive Steve Nichols said: “It seems a long time since we started looking at ways to improve the daily working conditions for our Oakwood day service.
“We always knew the limitations of trying to run and meet the growing demand for this great service from below stairs, actually in the cellars of the hall.
“Now, thanks to the generosity of parents, relatives, supporters, charitable trusts and trust officers, we have this fantastic building.”
He added: “The number of people attending Oakwood since the opening of the centre has already grown significantly.
“We always knew that the need was there, but now at last we can offer the space, time and facilities to expand the Oakwood service. It really makes a difference, as you can see in the work which has been produced by Oakwood.
“Without mentioning individual names, on behalf of the trustees and management team may I give our heartfelt thanks for all the generous donations we have received.
“The quality of the building would not have been possible without the support of our builders Rowlinsons.
“Special thanks to Steve Weir, Alvin and Dermot and his team, including of course our own works foreman, Nick Hart, who provided daily oversight.”
The centre was opened by Gill Cuthbert, who cut the ribbon.
Visitors also enjoyed a selection of cakes, tea and coffee while they explored the improved facilities.
