Eye clinic is up for health gong

-

A CLINIC specialising in age related macular degeneration has been nominated for a national award after outstanding praise from patients.

Eyecare Medical, based on Byrons Lane, is in the running for the ‘clinical service of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence.

The nomination recognises its exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration.

AMD affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK.

‘Clinical service of the year’ is an award for medical staff, teams or services which provide diagnosis or treatment for macular disease, and which demonstrate exceptionally good practice in the care of people with central vision loss.

Andrew Needham, consultant ophthalmologist and chief executive, said he was delighted to have been nominated for the third year in a row.

He said: “We are extremely proud to have been nominated for the third consecutive year by our patients and hope to win it for a second year.

“We are passionate about providing an excellent high-quality service for our patients in our three clinics in Cheshire and it is reassuring to know that we are fulfilling our aim.

“We regularly review the way we care for our patients. As a result of listening to our patients we recently opened a new community AMD clinic in Northwich which is closer to home for many.

“This new clinic prevents patients having to travel great distances unnecessarily.”

Vera Rice, of Macclesfield, who nominated Mr Needham and his team, said: “Mr Needham takes great care of his patients. He gives help and his patience is unique.

“The calmness with which he treats every question you asks puts one at ease, and his staff also, have to be praised.”

Judges will present the awards at the Society’s annual London conference on September 26.

Cathy Yelf from the Macular Society said: “It’s a tribute to the wonderful work going on at the hospital and we are grateful that even within very stretched NHS services there are people who can still provide truly excellent services.”
