Jalal’s bow one of the positives for Askey

- ANDY DELANEY

DESPITE an opening day of the season defeat at the hands of Torquay United, Macc manager John Askey was able to take plenty of positives.

Macclesfield saw a number of chances go missing during the course of Saturday’s loss, most notably through seasoned midfielder Danny Whitaker.

However Askey was satisfied with the 34-year-old’s efforts.

He said: “He’s a very good player and if you wanted a chance to fall to anybody you would normally say Danny, but it wasn’t to be.

“First one he missed the target and the second one he fired it at the keeper, but the main thing is that he’s got in there and created a chance.”

Askey was also impressed with the debut performance of former Tottenham keeper, Shwan Jalal, but he feels the squad’s aim is to learn from minor mistakes and to deliver results with good performances simultaneously.

“We have to learn from it, we’ve got to be better on the second ball because that was perhaps their only chance in the second half.

“I think they had one very early on in the first half after about 10 seconds but apart from that they didn’t create anything so I was pleased with that.

“Defensively I thought we did well, I thought the keeper who came in was excellent and before their goal we should’ve had a foul on the keeper, it was a blatant foul but you have to live with that.

“Overall though I was pleased with the performance, we controlled the game but obviously not pleased with the result”
