Pals hope charity road trip will be a big laugh
ATEAM of pals heading on a roadtrip for charity are hoping Ken Dodd and his tickling stick will help steer them in the right direction.
The friends are driving thousands of miles across Europe as part of the Ramshackle Rally, a driving challenge which sees teams head across five countries in five days in a car worth no more than £250.
captain Simon Spurrell, 48, who makes up one quarter of the Diddymen team from Macclesfield, says they were inspired by a group of Dutch drivers who passed through the town on a similar adventure in the summer.
Dad-of-one Simon said: “I got chatting to a load of Dutch guys who were taking part in a similar thing and I thought it seemed quite fun. I mentioned it to a few friends and we decided we should have a go.”
The team - which includes Julian Higginson, 46, Keith Hallam, 42, and James Henshaw, 38, - have transformed a 20-year-old volvo into homage to Ken Dodd with brightly covered fur.
Simon added: “We were joking that we were going to have so much fun it was going to be a ‘ laughter tour’.
Nobody is as mad and zany as Ken Dodd so we decided he would be a good theme for the car.”
But it’s not all fun and laughter for the boys, who are raising money for a serious cause.
Simon said: “We thought it would be sensible to raise money as well as having fun. Destiny Children was perfect because it helps children living in poverty in Mombasa. And perhaps what’s most important is that 100percent of the money raised goes to the charity, nothing is spent on administration costs.”
The route, which sets off on September 17, also takes in three of the highest mountains and most dangerous roads in Europe, which will be a challenge for team member Julian, from Bollington, who has undergone hypnotherapy to overcome his fear of heights.
Simon, who runs ITG Group and the Cheshire Cheese Company, added: “It’s going to be quite a challenge, we’ve had the car checked over by the guys at Hully Road garage and Julian is going to be avoiding driving the mountain passes, but it should be fun.”
