Show team plan for 50th event
AS THE dust settles on a bumper village show, organisers look to next year’s anniversary event.
The team behind the Sutton Ex-Servicemen’s Club 49th Annual Flower and Vegetable Show earlier this month were pleased with a turnout of hundreds of visitors to the event.
Nearly 200 people displayed 1,124 exhibits at the club including baking, photography and art, and in a marquee on land owned by Peter and Jenny Barber.
The organisers say it’s one of the best shows around, at a time when similar community shows are struggling.
They want to build on the momentum of this year for next year’s 50th anniversary show – which they say will be bigger and better still.
Robert Barnard, show secretary, said: “Next year is a really big thing for us.
“At a time where other village shows are folding due to, among other things, financial pressures and lack of support ours goes from strength to strength. We are one of the biggest village shows in town if not East Cheshire.
“The show has become a popular fixture in the village diary and no sooner as this year’s show is over do we start to look ahead to next year. To get to 50 shows is amazing.
“The village is really still engaged. I’ve had so many nice comments following this year’s show, and so we hope to make next year bigger and better than ever.”
Robert is encouraging allotment societies and gardeners, bakers, flower arrangers, artists, photographers and children to join the fun.
He said: “If you’ve never exhibited at a show before ours is a great one to cut your teeth on, great fun but still competitive.
“We don’t raise much money and to break even can be a challenge but the recent support of Jobling Gowler has been a godsend and we also have fundraisers ahead of the show to help cover the costs.
“The show is more than making money, it’s a great way of bringing the community together.
“I’m planning a couple of big things for next year.”
Next year’s show is on Sunday, September 4.
