School succumbs to student rule

-

TEACHERS took a step back when students took over at Tytherington School for the day.

The enthusiastic pupils were taking part in National Takeover Day, which gives young people the chance to experience adult roles in a professional environment.

Many of the roles students took on at the Manchester Road school included opportunities to develop leadership skills such as public speaking, time management and collaboration.

Students from all over the school took part in various roles including a PE teacher, receptionist, deputy head teacher and caretaking roles.

And the tough job of being headmaster for the day was taken on by three students.

Caitlyn Hunter and Aidan Simpson from year seven, and Daisy Taylor, from year 10.

Caitlyn said: “It really helped me to think on my feet”.

And Aidan said the day enabled him to appreciate what went on behind the scenes at his school.

Their day included taking staff briefing, walking the school site with the premises manager, reviewing website plans and joining a snowplan meeting.

National Take Over Day is an annual event organised by the Children’s Commissioner.

Emmanuel Botwe, headteacher, said: “Takeover day was a great success.

“I was taken over by two year seven students and a year 10 and I was exceptionally impressed by their ability to communicate and work in a team.

“Aidan, Caitlyn and Daisy were absolute stars!

“We will be running another Takeover Day next term”.

Tytherington School’s Christmas Concert will be held at St Michael’s Church on Tuesday, December 8. It runs from 7.30pm until 10pm. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for students and concessions.
