Macc out to weather storm at Southport

-

MACC manager John Askey believes the conditions will play a big part in his side’s match at relegation-threatened Southport this weekend.

The Silkmen are flying at the moment and head to the Merseyrail Community Stadium looking to make it five straight wins in the National League.

It has left Askey’s side seventh in the table but he thinks form could go out the window on Saturday.

“It will be tough at Southport because we will have to adapt to the conversion as it is usually very windy down there,” he said.

“They’ve had a new manager come in and they might have lost 1-0 last week but I’m sure they battled very hard and we are expecting a difficult game as always.

“We like to get the ball down and play so hopefully the pitch will suit us but we won’t be taking anything for granted.

“Everyone came through okay after the game against Wrexham last week so thankfully we don’t appear to have any injuries for the match.”

Macc are now just two points from the play-off places ahead of Saturday’s match, and Askey has revealed he had a points total in his mind several weeks ago.

“I was hoping we would have around 40 points before Boxing Day so we’re already in a very good position,” he said.

“It’s important that we are in good form around this Christmas period as we are keen to more into the play-offs.”

The Silkmen’s last game saw them pick up a 3-2 victory at fellow promotion hopefuls Wrexham, with Kristian Dennis scoring twice and Danny Whitaker getting the other goal.

It means that they have now scored 13 goals in their last four National League games, and Askey was glad to pick up another win on the road.

“We knew that winning would put us in a good position so to go there and perform is very pleasing,” he said. “It’s nice to come to places like Wrexham and we had as many away supporters as I’ve seen at a match this season so I’m glad that they all went home happy.

“As well as we played I was a bit disappointed with the goals we conceded as they were avoidable but people switched off. All in all it was a great win for us though and it’s important that we continue on this good run.”

Southport are currently 21st in the National League table, having won just four of their 21 matches so far this season.

The two teams have already met in the reverse fixture this season as the match at the Moss Rose finished 0-0 back in August, with Andy Halls sent off for Macclesfield in that game.
