Golden glory for air cadet Emily
A YOUNG cadet has proved her mettle after receiving a Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.
Emily Bethell from 236 Bollington Squadron Air Training Corps won the award which is the highest honour in the Duke of Edinburgh series.
The awards celebrate commitment by young people to volunteering, improving a variety of skills, taking part in expeditions and participating in sport.
Emily, cadet warrant officer at the squadron, won the gold after 12 months of volunteering, a four day expedition and a residential staying away from home with people she did not know.
The award highlights the time and commitment that she has put it not only in the past 12 months to complete this stage but also in previous years to attain her bronze and silver awards.
Emily said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic.
“After several setbacks, it is such an incredible feeling knowing I’ve completed it. It has been a long time coming.”
Emily’s dad, Flight Lieutenant Alan Bethell, who is Officer Commanding for the 236 Bollington Squadron ATC, said getting the gold is a big deal.
He said: “To the best of our knowledge, Emily’s gold award is the first in our squadron history. The award centres around making a fairly long term commitment to the community, the progression of the individual’s physical health, the improvement of skills and talents, and overcoming challenges. It is a nationally recognised award, and Emily’s determination and commitment towards completing the award to the stringent standard of the Air Cadet Organisation, set a fantastic example to younger cadets and her peers. We are incredibly proud of her. Congratulations Emily.”
