Manager laments lack of clinical finishing

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey said his team should have been more clinical in front of goal during the defeat against Eastleigh.

Two goals from James Constable earned Eastleigh the victory against the Silkmen, despite a goal from Tony Diagne. Askey was frustrated with his players in the match and felt that they didn’t create as many opportunities as they should have.

“I thought there was very little in the game, we huffed and puffed without really getting in behind them,” he said.

“There were very few chances from both sides so I’m just disappointed that we haven’t performed a little bit better.

“They will go away thinking they put in a good performance away from home, but we just have to look at it again and see how we performed, sometimes we got a little bit frustrated. It was all a bit stop-start and we never really got going.” Injuries to the Macc squad meant that Askey could only name four substitutes on the bench for the clash.

The boss insists he won’t be making excuses though, and had complete faith in the team that he selected for the game.

“It doesn’t help when you’ve got a small squad, but I was happy with the players that took to the field, we have more than enough to cause teams trouble in our league,” he said.

“It wasn’t a game of many chances and that’s probably the disappointing thing from my point of view that we didn’t create a lot.”
