Caldwell likes look of top prospect Danny
MACCLESFIELD Town midfielder Danny Whitehead has signed for League One side Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old has signed a two and a half year deal with Latics, but will remain with Macclesfield on loan for the rest of the season.
He made his latest appearance for the Silkmen on Saturday when he came off the bench during the 1-0 defeat to Halifax Town, playing half an hour after replacing Jack Sampson.
Whitehead has been extremely impressive for Macc this season, and Wigan manager Gary Caldwell is delighted to have him joining his club.
“He’s one we have watched at length and identified as having the potential to play at a higher level,” he said.
“Every club is on the lookout for fresh talent and it is a case of acting fast and looking to the future with these signings.
“Now that everything is over the line, he will combine his training here and with playing for Macclesfield, as he gains more first team experience and we also get to know him.
“Like any young player, their early career can take a few twists and turns, but it’s clear Danny has potential, which we want him to start realising with us.”
Whitehead began his professional career with Stockport County back in 2011, making nearly 60 appearances and scoring six goals.
That form resulted in a move to Premier League side West Ham United in June 2013, but Whitehead failed to make any league appearances for the Hammers and he left in January 2015.
A short spell at Accrington Stanley came next, before Whitehead then joined Macclesfield during the summer after a successful trial.
He will now hope he can continue to contribute to the Silkmen for the remainder of the season as they look to secure a play-off place.
