Air cadet nominated for national award

-

A CADET who has enjoyed a string of achievements this year has been shortlisted for a national award.

It’s been a busy year for Emily Bethell from 236 Bollington Squadron Air Training Corps.

She has been carrying out official duties as the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire’s Cadet, helping Lord Lieutenant David Briggs with duties including escorting him and Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, at an event in Warrington.

Also this year she achieved a gold Duke of Edinburgh award after a series of challenges.

This is the highest honour in the Duke of Edinburgh series which celebrates commitment by young people to volunteering, improving a variety of skills, taking part in expeditions and participating in sport.

Now the former Tytherington School pupil whose dad is Flight Lieutenant Alan Bethell, has been chosen to represent the north region for the year in the final stages of a contest named the ATC 75 Sword competitions. It is awarded annually to the best female cadet in the air cadet organisation.

She was chosen alongside a candidate for the Dacre Sword, which celebrates the best male cadet.

A spokesman said: “Our region of the Air Training Corps has now completed the difficult task of selecting two cadets who will represent the region in the final stages of the Dacre Sword and the ATC 75 Sword Competitions and we’re so proud our very own Emily has been selected as nomination for the ATC 75 Sword.

“The ATC 75 Sword is awarded annually to the best female cadet in the whole of the air cadet organisation, so a nomination is something for both the Cadet Warrant Officer, the squadron and Bollington to be very proud of.

“Very many congratulations Emily and good luck. We’ll have everything crossed.”

The awards will be presented in a ceremony at RAF Cranwell on Saturday, April 16.

The RAF hopeful, who lives with her mum Sharon, dad Alan and sister Lucy on Southdown Close, was appointed to her prestigious role of Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet in June.

The title was given to her in recognition of her outstanding service at Bollington Squadron Air Cadets.
