Promoted AFC set sights on double
CHESHIRE FL 2 UNICORN ATHLETIC...... 0 AFC MACCLESFIELD ..... 4
AFC Macclesfield secured promotion to League 1 with a 4-0 success at Unicorn Athletic.
The first half was lacklustre with Macc looking nervous and struggling to find that killer ball to open up the opposition defence.
On the stroke of half time, Macclesfield were awarded a corner and Greg Mathers swung the ball in from the right. Harry Wheetman lost his marker and struck the ball into the Unicorn net.
A couple of positional changes at half time brought Sam Williamson back to left back and pushed Scott Wright into the front three. Knowing that a second goal was vital, Macclesfield started to put more pressure on the Unicorn defence and Chris Coppenhall thought he’d doubled Macclesfield’s lead but unfortunately, he was adjudged offside.
Jack Banister suffered the same punishment when he found the back of the net.
With Unicorn tiring, more chances started to arrive and in the 62nd minute, Jonny Cavanagh played the ball out wide to Mathers, who was aware Scott Wright was overlapping. He let the ball run superbly through his legs to find the on rushing Wright. Wright was left with only the Unicorn goalkeeper to beat and he calmly placed the ball against the inside of the post and into the net to double Macclesfield’s lead.
The third wasn’t long in coming.
Wheetman was brought down in the box and with no hesitation the referee pointed to the spot; Mathers stepped up and converted the penalty.
Minutes later it was four. Jack Banister this time beat the offside trap to secure all three points.
AFC Macclesfield are promoted but the job is far from done. Next in their sights is the league title and a win next weekend against their title rivals would secure top spot.
