Design treasures line up for civic prize

- STUART GREER

APIE shop, public art and a multi-activity centre have been shortlisted for the annual Macclesfield Civic Awards.

The gongs celebrate notable developments which took place over the past year - and a few lesser known ones.

Previous winners have included parks, buildings, renovations, extensions, boundary walls and conservation schemes.

Nominations for this year include: ●● MAC multi activity centre – Goodall Street. ●● Park Green Mill – Throwsters Court apartments – Peaks and Plains. ●● Homes on Chester Road, Broken Cross – Waterchild Properties. ●● Homes on Grisedale Way – Rosemanor Estates. ●● Cuckstoolpit Hill, 1&2 Silk View – Mr J Henshaw. ●● West Park View, Victoria Road – Envidia Homes. ●● Old Labour Exchange, South Park Road – residential conversion – Peaks and Plains. ●● Statham Street terrace - housing redevelopment at Crompton Road and Parr Street – Silkdale Homes Ltd ●● Mural on side wall of Snow Goose, Sunderland Street. ●● Refurbishment of Nat West Bank, Chestergate ●● Lord of the Pies - Chestergate

The awards are run Macclesfield Civic Society which look for good design and preservation or enhancement of the character of the town.

The size and scale of the work, appropriateness for its setting and the promotion of the history, identity and distinctiveness of Macclesfield are also considered.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Heritage Centre on April 20 with the awards presented by Mayor of Macclesfield, Coun Liz Durham. The Judges include members of the Civic Society committee, Macclesfield Town Council Councillors.

This year there were no nominations for the Wooden Spoon award to highlight neglected sites and buildings.

Keith Smith, chairman of Macclesfield Civic Society, said: “The winners won’t get a statue, lifetime celebrity status or even a feature in Hello but there will be lots of recognition for a job well done, a handy commendation and, if especially good, a trendy ceramic plaque to hang on the wall – so plenty to play for.”

The awards scheme is supported by Macclesfield Town Council.
