Mayor ends busy year with civic dinner
THE MAYOR marked the end of a busy year with a civic dinner with guests.
Coun Angela Williams has come to the end of her mayoral year and had the chance to comment on some of the highlights at the special civic event.
It was her second term as mayor of the town, with the first from 2010-11.
More than 100 people attended the dinner at Bollington Civic Hall including mayor of Cheshire East Coun Hilda Gaddum, mayor of Macclesfield Coun Liz Durham, mayor of Poynton Coun Rebecca Horsman-Johnson and MP David Rutley.
Coun Williams said: “The event was well attended and the evening was a great success.”
The evening started with a toast to the queen by the mayor’s consort husband Dai Williams.
MP David Rutley made a speech in honour of the mayor and she responded with a speech.
She told guests she was born above a newsagents in Bollington and has always lived in the town.
In her speech she said: “The past year has been quite different from my mayoral year five years ago as we had six new councillors elected in May last year.
“Five years ago the councillors were all experienced and some had been on the Town Council for very many years. In fact, I am now the longest serving councillor.
“The past year for me has been busy, sometimes rather tiring but very enjoyable and memorable and ranges from sailing ducks down Sowcar Brook to having my face painted at the Life Church.
“I think that I have attended over 80 functions as your town mayor. The civic service was wonderful as it incorporated Battle of Britain Sunday. The dedication of the two new memorial stones listing the names of all the soldiers from Bollington was also a highlight.”
A raffle was held in aid of the mayor’s chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK, which raised £380.
Coun Williams said after the dinner: “The venue was ideal as the newly refurbished Civic Hall looks very impressive now.
“I was very touched when David Rutley led a standing ovation at the end of my speech.
“It was a wonderful climax to my mayoral year.”
