- STUART GREER

AMAN who attacked his girlfriend and then turned on three men who tried to help has been sentenced.

Craig Shaw, 53, was seen dragging his girlfriend from her car by her arm during a heated row, the court was told.

Samuel-Jon Bradbury, Alan Jones and Matthew Preston, who were working on a building site, intervened and tried to restrain Shaw, but he then turned on them, prosecutors said.

Mr Bradbury and Mr Jones suffered kicks to their shins and Mr Preston was spat on during the incident at Chadwick Terrace on November 5, last year.

Shaw, of Nicholson Avenue, Macclesfield, admitted four charges of assault by beating.

On April 19, he was sentenced at Macclesfield magistrates’ court to a community order with rehabilitation activity and 100 hours unpaid work.

Magistrate Jos Saunders, chairman of the bench, said: “This was a sustained, lengthy attack.

“Three men thought your partner was in distress and went to intervene.”

Simon Pover, prosecuting, said: “The couple had been in an on-off relationship since August 2014.

“On November 11 the defendant left the house and the victim took the opportunity to lock him out.

“At 11am she went to her car to drive to work.

“As she opened the door the defendant came from nowhere and grabbed the keys.

“It began a struggle and he began pulling her from the car.

“The three men were working on Queen’s Avenue and became involved when they came to her assistance.

“Mr Jones heard the commotion and saw a male and female shouting.

“He became concerned about what was going on. Mr Bradley went to help his colleague and saw the defendant drag her from the car by the arm, shouting give me the keys.

“She was screaming. The defendant swore at the men.

“They took hold of him and the victim was able to get the keys back.

“Mr Preston assisted the other men and the defendant spat onto his arm.

“As they were trying to put him in a more comfortable position the defendant kicked out hitting two men in the shins.

“He also tried to bite. He was then held on the ground until the police arrived.”

Shaw, who is a selfemployed builder, defending himself said: “I am very sorry. It won’t happen again.”
