Funding hunt for new crossing
COUNCIL chiefs are looking for funding to get a new pedestrian crossing at Poynton Green.
Poynton Town Council is exploring adding the missing elements, including the crossing which formed part of the original shared spaces scheme.
In a report at the annual council meeting, Councillor Howard Murray, chairman of the council’s Facilities, Infrastructure and Economic Development (FIED) Committee, said the council was exploring funding options.
He said: “There has been some public pressure for a pedestrian crossing at the Poynton Green junction.
“The committee have reviewed the original plans for this part of the revitalisation and will be attempting to put together a financial package to bring this and the missing elements into being.”
In his report, Coun Murray said Cheshire East Council had finally resolved most of the outstanding ‘snagging issues’ from the build phases of the shared spaces scheme, but there is still a regular list of maintenance issues including lighting, localised flooding, uneven sets and kerbs and repairs by utility works.
The £4m scheme replaced traffic lights with a narrow, singlelane road and roundabouts three years ago and sees cars, bikes and pedestrians all have equal priority on the road.
The award winning project has been hailed as a success and is being copied in other parts of the UK and world.
However, it has suffered from subsidence problems with lorries driving over grids on London Road North, London Road South and Chester Road, which has now been resolved.
