Group to look after canal bridge
A NEW group has been launched to maintain a neglected section of Macclesfield Canal.
The Canal and River Trust (CRT) has developed a programme of adoption groups which encourage communities to look after stretches of canal around a mile in length.
There were several adoption groups on Macclesfield Canal, but none in the town itself.
Now a group has launched to maintain the canal at bridge 40 on Windmill Lane. It comes after residents Duncan Learmond and Ray Butler had a meeting with MP David Rutley and took the idea to the Macclesfield Canal Society, which then secured the backing of the CRT. The group has now had its first tidy-up at the canal.
Mr Rutley, who attended the session, said: “It was a pleasure to attend the first meeting. Volunteers have worked hard to get the group in place. This is an important initiative to make Macclesfield Canal a more enjoyable place to visit. The canal is an important part of our heritage.”
The group will meet on the first Wednesday of the month. All are welcome.
