Mystery as Sodje leaves Moss Rose
MACCLESFIELD Town FC have confirmed assistant manager Efe Sodje has left the club – but mystery surrounds the reasons why.
The former right-handman to manager John Askey has not been involved with the club since November last year.
But it is not until now that the club has confirmed that the former Nigerian international is no longer involved.
Mystery surrounds what led to the 42-yearold Nigerian’s departure, but Sodje claims he was sacked for allegedly ‘swearing’ at a groundsman at the Moss Rose.
He denies the claim and is now taking legal action against the club and has instructed employment lawyer Mark Bestley to request an employment tribunal.
The club refuse to answer Mr Sodje’s claims and only issued the following statement: “Mac- clesfield Town can today announce that Efe Sodje has left his position at the football club. The football club will be making no further comment on this matter.”
Mr Sodje said he has been looking for a new job since November.
He said: “It is true I am no longer involved with the club but I cannot go into detail.
“I was allegedly accused of swearing at the groundsman. That led to me leaving the club.
“I was dismissed in November 2015 but it has not been made public yet.
“I will be challenging the dismissal and have instructed employment lawyer Mark Bestley.
“Obviously I have been looking for a job since November. My CV is out there.”
Sodje’s departure is the latest chapter in his long association with the club.
Sodje joined the Silkmen in 1997 when the club was promoted to the Football League.
Over the next two seasons he became a local legend, scoring six goals in 83 appearances before leaving for Luton Town in 1999.
In 2013, he made a shock return as assistant manager.
