Nursery youngsters are given chance to go ‘wild’

-

CHILDREN at Prestbury Day Nursery enjoyed a break from their daily routine with a month of ‘wildness’ as part of a Wildlife Trust initiative.

Every day for 30 days, girls and boys at the nursery took part in a different ‘random act of wildness’, from doing yoga and trying their hand at meditation in the school’s outdoor woodland area to watching animals, including squirrels and birds, on webcams.

They also enjoyed getting stuck into the arty task of making nature collages.

The adventurous youngsters also enjoyed getting their hands dirty by taking part in a ‘mud kitchen’ activity and making ‘mini beasts’ out of salt dough, which they will now paint and decorate.

Each child was given a card so they knew what their ‘wild activity’ was for the day and a funky wallchart was used to track their progress.

Debra O’Hara, the nursery’s assistant manager, said: “The children all absolutely loved it.

“It really is a great way of getting them outside to look at all the animals and birds, of which we have a lot where we are.

“We will definitely be doing it again!” ●● A MEMORIAL service to remember all those who gave their lives at the Battle of the Somme was held in the chapel in Mottram St Andrew.

Led by Rev Ben Clowes, the service highlighted the two young men from the village community who were killed in action – Henry Slater, 21, and John Frederick Waller, 23. The men have no known resting place but their names are recorded on the Thiepval Memorial in France.

The event contained poems and readings from the Mayor of Cheshire East, Coun Olivia Hunter; Macclesfield MP David Rutley; Angela Philpott, vice Chairman of Mottram St Andrew Parish Council; and Pat Smith, Margaret Graham and Ian Wright from the community.

The Act of Remembrance was led by the chairman of Mottram St Andrew Parish Council, Bill Pilkington, along with Karen Robinson of the Over Alderley brass band.

Karen sounded the last post and reveille on her bugle to denote the start and end of the two minutes silence held.

A collection of £190 was also gathered during the service for the Alderley Edge branch of the Royal British Legion, which had representatives at the service.

Parish Council chairman, Bill Pilkington, said: “The service was very well attended and it was a very moving experience.”
