Askey pins down evasive Dan

-

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey has expressed his delight after midfielder Danny Whitaker finally signed a new deal with the club.

The 35-year-old has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract to keep him at the Moss Rose for another season.

Whitaker’s decision came just days before Macclesfield’s opening pre-season fixture, and Askey revealed it can sometimes be difficult trying to get in touch with his veteran midfielder.

“Danny is always one of the last players to sign. He takes about 20 phone calls to get hold of but he has re-signed now,” he told the club’s official website.

“He has a lot of quality and hopefully he can have another good season for us. We have Danny, George Pilkington and John McCombe who are all three experienced pros.

“Not only are they experienced, but they rub off on people. They all do everything right and it is good to have people like that around the squad.”

Meanwhile, Macclesfield have revealed details of a unique initiative that could see fans not only help to contribute to the playing budget, but also share in the benefits that come with promotion to the Football League.

The club has launched the ‘Silkmen 2016/17 Campaign Fund’, a scheme that allows people to contribute in multiples of £50 to go towards the playing budget in order to give Macclesfield Town the best chance of success this season and with a target of achieving promotion back to the EFL.

It comes after the success of last season’s ‘10K Dash’ initiative, and club chairman Mark Blower hopes that the supporters can get behind the club.

“We wanted to give supporters the opportunity to influence the success of Macclesfield Town, but at the same time didn’t want to be seen as coming out with the begging bowl,” he said.

“It gives supporters the chance to personally contribute to the playing budget with the benefit of seeing a financial return on that contribution if the club is promoted at the end of the 2016/17 season.
