It was presented with a plaque by the body which supports research in the NHS - the National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) - at a ceremony at the surgery. This was the first time the Greater Manchester arm of the network has named a GP practice as a Primary Care Research Centre of Excellence.

Debbie Vinsun, chief operating officer of Greater Manchester CRN, said: “Bollington Medical Centre is the first GP practice to be recognised in this way.

“Bollington was chosen because it’s extremely research active, responsive to all our requests, recruits the patients it says it’s going to and manages to fit it all in as well as running a busy surgery.”

Led by GP Dr Pete Wilson, practice nurse Sister Ann Burgess and practice manager Laura Beresford, Bollington Medical Centre has been supporting patients to take part in research projects for some time.

Its research team won ‘Best Community Research Contribution’ and Sister Burgess was named ‘Research Nurse of the Year’ at the Greater Manchester Clinical Research Awards in November 2015.

The team was recognised for its work on an innovative screening programme and trial of a new drug for chronic constipation.

Dr Wilson said: “We’re delighted to be recognised and it’s testament to the hard work of the whole team.

“Patients that we think are suitable for trials are contacted in lots of different ways. Sometimes they’re sent a letter, which is followed up with a phone call from a clinician they know and we believe that personal approach is really important.”
