Club progress excites Gerard

WILMSLOW Golf Club’s General Manager Gerard Heaslip has been in the position for just over a year and he has seen all aspects of the club develop and move forward.

Gerard said: “Our free draining course attracted players from across the county as other courses were forced to close during the wet winter and spring that we suffered and we have a course Masterplan drawn up by renowned course architect Martin Ebert of Mackenzie and Ebert that will be phased in over the coming years.

“Membership keeps increasing steadily especially with our six-month lady beginners and our practice ground membership.

“On the course two of our lady members Sybra Eardley and Amanda O’Brien reached the last eight of the Cheshire Senior Ladies GA championsh­ip and Hywel Shaw, our Junior Captain has played for Cheshire u16’s and a combined ages Cheshire Boys team winning both of his matches.

“Also at junior level our Junior team finished in a top spot in the Cheshire Junior Team Championsh­ips at Chester.

“Certain changes have also been made in dress code and we are also refurbishi­ng the ladies facilities and have already refurbishe­d our balcony and practice facility this year.

“We have staged very successful Seniors and Mixed Open events soon to be followed by the national ranked Cheshire Cat, incorporat­ing the Wilmslow Crow, and junior and ladies opens which are both offering the chance to book online.

“There is plenty more in the pipeline and these are certainly exciting times at one of the region’s top clubs and I am delighted to be a part of it.”

The Men’s July medal at Wilmslow was won by Richard Boyce with his 69 seeing him home from Jamie Donald and Robert Bullock, both 70, and Reg Maddock and Simon Isherwood, both 71.

Macclesfie­ld ladies played a medal for the Captain’s Prize and Judy Mutter was an outstandin­g winner on 73 from Georgina Whalley, 79, and Margaret Bray, 80, with Kay Atkin having the lowest gross of 95.

John Hogan was the winner of the Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall with 34 points, two more than Mike Gates.

A Saturday Stableford at Shrigley was won by Alan Smith with 35 points from Don Farquharso­n, 34, and Mike Pollitt and Tony Mathers, both 33.

The Profession­al’s Cup at Styal saw Tom Bloor out on his own with 62, five clear of Simon Geddis and Jack McLeod.

In a Sunday Stableford at Styal Tom just missed out on a double as he lost a cpo on 36 to David Campbell.

Medal action for Styal ladies saw Lynn Guy lead in with 71 from Pat Chadwick, 74, and Jenny Merren and Mel Hill, both 77.

A Four Ball Texas Scramble at Davenport had the fab four of Paul Robinson, Dave Slater, Dave Waldron-Kelly and Mark Kilpatrick win at a canter with 53.3.

The President’s Prize to Davenport ladies needed a cpo on 73 to see Deborah Housley win from Pauline Hague with Margaret Bruce a shot off the pace.

The Alderley Edge Challenge Cup was won by Peter Burns with 64 from Andrew Marshall, 66, and Oliver Lane and Craig Aston, both 67.

The President’s Junior prize at Prestbury was won by Matthew Salt with 67, nine shots less than Jeremiah Hayes.

Prestbury ladies played the Maud Bason Memorial medal with county star Jae Bowers leading in after a cpo on 75 with Jane Campaigne, one less than Josephine Harrison.

The draws have been made for round three in three of the top Manchester Alliance Inter Club Knock outs- the biggest of their kind in the country.

The City Glass Men’s Foursomes (holders Helsby) sees the clubs battle to reach the quarter finals and the draw is: Bramall Park v Dukinfield; Crewe v Davenport; Denton v Breightmet; Bolton Old Links v Birchwood; Dunham Forest v Houldswort­h; Blackley v Oldham; Chapel v Stamford. Romiley v Pike Fold.

The Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes (holders Pleasingto­n): Withington v Hale; Davenport v Sale; Denton v Brookdale; Pike Fold v Alsager; Tytheringt­on v Antrobus; Ringway v Ashton-underLyne; Crewe v Werneth; North Manchester v Leyland.
