Watson proud Macc met Championship challenge

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town assistant manager Steve Watson felt his side put in a performance they should be proud of following that goalless draw with Championship side Wigan Athletic.

Latics had a near full-strength squad available to them for the game, but the Silkmen gave as good as they got and were unlucky not to score during the 90 minutes.

Watson was impressed with what he saw from the team, and heaped praise on the players for their efforts.

“The boys did really well and they looked very well organised, Wigan had a lot of the ball but you’d expect that given the money they’ve spent and the fact they’ve just been promoted to the Championship,” he told the club’s official website.

“The players looked like they were enjoying themselves so we allowed them to play out there a little longer than usual knowing that we then had a game on Saturday.

“What was pleasing was we got through injury free, some lads got a very important 90 minutes under their belt.

“We knew this was going to be a huge step up, we knew that we weren’t going have time on the ball and the amount of possession that we had last week against Leek.

“We knew when we got possession we had to make it count and we had the best chance of the first half with a bit of a goal mouth scramble and had we converted the penalty we would have had a very good win.”
