Funding boost for boxing club
MACCLESFIELD Boys Boxing Club is celebrating after securing cash to buy new equipment.
The sports group, which is based on Park Green, has been handed a grant of £2,000 from Macclesfield Town Council.
It is a real boost for the club, which is always looking for extra cash to keep training young boxers.
Head coach Kevin Bradbury said the money had been spent on new corner pads for the boxing ring, dummies for the children and adults, medicine balls and tracksuits for the coaches.
He said: “It’s fantastic that the town council have supported us. We have not increased the fees since the first day we opened and much of our equipment needs replacing.
“This cash had come in very handy.”
Meanwhile, the club will be taking on the 108-step challenge, which involves running up and down the town centre’s famous flight of steps.
The plan is for Jack Rawlins, John Watson and Max Homer to take on the sponsored event on Saturday, August 27.
Jack said: “The whole thing could take many hours but it’s for a worthy club and whether we raise £1 or £100 it doesn’t matter.
“Anyone and everyone is welcome to come and join in to help raise money for our club to help pay for new equipment and to keep us open.”
Macclesfield Boys’ Boxing Club (MBBC) was launched in 2004. The voluntary organisation, which aims to continue to develop young people as competitive boxers, works with the local community to try to keep membership fees low so as to encourage youngsters from all backgrounds.
It is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6pm to 8pm.
Sessions cost £1 for junior members.
Earlier this year Kevin Bradbury, head coach received a Civic Award for his commitment to the club.
The council’s community grants scheme has so far awarded over £12,000 this year. For more information visit macclesfield-tc.gov.uk.
