Town council in bid for crossing

-

THE TOWN council is collecting data on a busy road in a bid to get a crossing installed.

Residents have been concerned about the safety of pedestrians outside the Co-op store on Wellington Road for some time. A post about the matter this week on the Bollington Facebook group has attracted a lot of debate.

Bollington Town Council has been looking at ways to create a pedestrian crossing there.

Now the councillors have bought a traffic monitoring device, which captures the speed of cars and numbers of vehicles, to build a case for a crossing.

They will present the data to Cheshire East council.

David Naylor, Bollington town clerk, said a zebra crossing would cost £20,000 or pelican crossing with lights would be £40,000.

He said: “We have already raised this with Cheshire highways.

“A new crossing would ease the problem of parking on the main road because of the zig-zag lines and the project could also allow a hole in the wall to be created so people can more easily get through to the shop.

“It would kill two birds with one stone.

“We are gathering traffic data and will present this to Cheshire East, but this is not going to happen next week.

“It’s not an easy job and will take time.”

Angela Roberts, who started the Facebook post on the matter and wrote to the town council to request a crossing, said: “This is by no means a reflection of the facility but with the increased number of cars from the new estate as well, it is becoming quite a task to cross here safely. Only this morning I saw a mum with her pushchair running as fast as she could in between gaps of cars.”
