Tytherington Club’s golf course makeover goes with a swing

-

A REVAMP of The Tytherington Club’s golf course is almost complete and the club is hoping the makeover will help make playing there a family affair.

The work, which began in July, has involved redesigning four of the holes and reducing and reshaping the bunkers to make the course more accessible and attractive.

General manager Alex Nock said: “We are trying to open the golf course up by reducing the big, old, daunting American style bunkers.

“Since they were put in around 30 years ago, loads of trees have grown there, making the course a really tough challenge.

“We don’t want to make it easy, just more of a fair challenge with the shallow pot style bunkers you see on the Masters and the Open Championship.

“We hope the work we’ve done reducing and reshaping them will open the course up and encourage more people who want to get into golf to come and have a go.”

The golf part of the club is open to men, women and children and unlike some other golf clubs, only uses mixed teams containing both sexes in competitions.

It also has a junior section for children.

Alex said: “Thirty per cent of our members are women and we are very keen to attract younger golfers and families as well.

“People used to have time to come and play four or five rounds of golf on Saturday mornings but they just don’t have the time now, so we hope this work will give them the opportunity to come together as families and while one is having a golf lesson for example, the other can be doing a workout.”

The works have been managed and designed by course architect Jonathan Gaunt with local golf course contractors Greasleys. The new course will use a process called hydroseeding to stimulate grass growth instead of turf, which should make the course easier to maintain. It will also incorporate forward tees – enabling the golf course to be played at its shortest length – to attract more senior players and golfing beginners.

Alex said: “The course is looking great and the renovations are well underway, despite the lack of sunshine over Macclesfield.

“It’s really exciting and the members can’t wait to see the final result.”

The work is expected to be finished by Sunday, August 28.
