Players fill void left by club’s top goalscorer

- SHELDAN KEAY

STEVE Watson has praised the Macclesfield Town players that have stepped up to the plate during the opening stages of the season.

The Silkmen were keen to sign a quality striker during the summer after last season’s top goalscorer, Kristian Dennis, pictured right, departed the club.

Financial restrictions made their hunt difficult, but Watson feels that a number of existing players have helped to fill the void so far.

“We’ll never use it as an excuse but everybody knows that there’s restrictions and everyone knows that we can’t just go out and buy a top striker,” he told the club’s official website.

“We said to the boys that they need to step up to the plate and to be fair everybody that you want to chip in with the goals has done which is good to see.”

Macclesfield have had a decent start to the campaign, winning three of their opening five matches. Speaking before Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Sutton, Watson was pleased with what the team had achieved so far.

“It’s not a bad place to be in at all, and even in the game we didn’t win against York we felt we should have definitely got something out of it against a team who will be right up there at the end of the season,” he said.

“All we can do now is make sure everybody stays fit, and from the looks of things it looks like everyone is coming through unscathed, which is a big thing for us.”
