Fond farewell to ‘amazing’ Beryl, 92

- DANIELLE ROPER

TRIBUTES have been paid to a ‘supermum’ cake maker who always had a smile on her face.

Grandmother- of- 13 Beryl Clough, 92, has died at her home in Tytherington after an illness.

The keen baker, who lived in Macclesfield for 46 years, became known locally due to her sugarcraft skills, and made many celebration cakes for weddings, birthdays, christenings and anniversaries.

Her daughter Yvonne, 62, who lives in Edinburgh, said she had suffered from cancer. She said: “She was an absolute perfectionist. She loved us all to bits and made all our wedding cakes.

“She was a cup half full kind of person with a cando attitude, a very caring person who loved her friends and was a good listener.

“She had a quirky sense of humour too.”

Beryl, who was a member of the Macclesfield branch of the British Sugarcraft Guild, also entered and won many competitions for her cake icing skills.

She was also a keen archer and a member of several groups including the New Century Bowmen of Macclesfield and the Red Hatters, for women over 50.

Yvonne said: “Mum was never one to sit around. She got into archery through my dad and she was quite a decent shot – she went to tournaments all over the UK. She was always very precise and detail-oriented and has a whole range of plaques she won for her cake icing.

“She was a supermum and we will all really miss her.”

Beryl loved dressmaking and gardening and a highlight of her year was attending the annual Tatton RHS Flower Show.

She also loved to go on holiday to Majorca and Ibiza with her family and spoke Spanish, German and Dutch after living in Holland for four years due to her husband’s job as a mechanical engineer.

She was born in Mellor and moved to Tytherington in 1970 with her late husband of 53 years, Arthur.

She died at her home on Thursday, August 18.

Bob Boland, church elder at Tytherington Family Worship Church, where Beryl was a member of the Thursday afternoon group for women, described the mum-offive as ‘amazing’.

He said: “She was incredibly gifted, modest and tough – she never complained and never let her illness get on top of her.

“She was incredibly sociable too and will be very much missed.”

A celebration of Beryl’s life will take place on Saturday, September 10 at Tytherington Family Worship Church at 2.30pm.
