Don’t take risk, experts advise

-

PEOPLE are taking a risk by failing to make a will, according to a leading legal expert.

Philip Hartley, probate solicitor at Blunts Solicitors, in Macclesfield, quotes an example in which an unmarried couple had no will.

Philip said: “The woman died unexpectedly in her mid 40s and, with no will, her partner was faced with the situation where her share of their home went to her parents and so his security was at risk.

“In addition, her parents had control and he had no say in decisions made about the funeral arrangements and her personal possessions.”

Blunts Solicitors is one of the firms supporting Will Week (October 3 to October 10) when they will write or amend a will in return for a donation to East Cheshire Hospice.

A simple will usually costs £125 plus VAT.

Blunts Solicitors, which has been providing legal provision in the town for more than 150 years, is always over-subscribed for this popular hospice initiative.

Philip added: “We are proud to be involved to raise awareness of the importance of wills and support our local hospice.

“Wills are vital to ensure your family and loved ones are looked after. Even if you think your families know what you want, this can lead to disagreement and conflict.

“Making a will ensures that when you die your estate is shared according to your wishes.

“Everyone should have a will but it’s even more important if you have children, own property or have savings, investments, insurance policies or own a business.”
