Pledge after parking fee launch

-

POYNTON Town Council has pledged to monitor new car parking charges near a local beauty spot.

Motorists parking at Nelson Pit Visitor Centre Car Park, off Lyme Road, now have to pay between 70p for up to one hour, £2 for up to three hours and £2.50 for up to 10 hours.

The charges, which will run between 9am and 9pm every day, will bring Nelson Pit into line with two other Cheshire East Council-owned countryside sites, Teggs Nose Country Park and Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve, which already have pay and display parking.

Poynton Town Council, backed by Poynton’s councillors on Cheshire East Council, was against the scheme which also introduces £55 annual permits and £50 canal boat user permits.

But the move was rubber stamped last month.

Liz Osborne, town clerk, said: “Despite efforts by Poynton Town Council and your Cheshire East councillors to resist their imposition, Cheshire East have made a decision to introduce car parking charges at Nelson Pit.

“The Town Council will monitor the situation closely and would ask all residents to report problems with parking to the Town Council.”

Nelson Pit is used by people accessing the Middlewood Way footpath and bridlepath, canal and walking to Lyme Park.

Cheshire East says the car park is well used, and heavily occupied at peak times such as holidays and in good weather, which results in overspill onto local roads.

Two other off-street parking areas – Poynton Coppice car park and Jackson’s Brickworks – will remain free.
